British North America: Colonies Before Provinces
Canada, as we know it today, did not always have 10 Provinces and 3 Territories. Before joining the Dominion of Canada, Provinces of Territories were Colonies of British North America. During Confederation in 1867, the Colonies of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick joined the Dominion of Canada. The rest of the Provinces and Territories joined later.

On this page you will use the following questions:

1. Write down the name of the province/territory that Sir John A MacDonald was from.

2. Write down the name of the province/territory that was the last to join the Confederation? Why did they want to join the Confederation?

3. Write down two of the main reasons why British Columbia joined the Confederation?

Click on the links for each Province and Territory to find out why each one decided to join or opted out of Confederation.
